Kristian Dahl Søttrup, the founder of Tours in Copenhagen: “Being a guide is the best part-time job in the world”

Tours in Copenhagen was founded in 2012 by Kristian Dahl Søttrup as a part-time project that quickly grew into a full-time profession in 2013. From 2019 Kristian became an Assistant Professor at Zealand - Sjællands Erhvervsakademi. Kristian has got a mercantile background and teaches Economy, Innovation, Organization, HRM and similar courses today. And Tours in Copenhagen is Kristian’s a part-time job now. The team consists of a founder and guide Kristian, and guide Ditte Karlsbøll Jensen.

The Tours in Copenhagen has got a jester as a logo. A jester was known as an entertainer who often traveled from city to city and country to country entertaining kings as well as the common man. He was a storyteller who told true stories with a twist of humor. The jester knew about history, contemporary events, and the town happenings. This made him as like as the internet of his time. The Tours in Copenhagen is very similar to the jester of the past. Guides know their history and know how to tell a good story.

“Tours in Copenhagen is a tour operator based in Copenhagen, Denmark, from where we only offer private guided tours for smaller groups. We offer walking, biking, and driving tours by default, but have also been out sailing and even flying with guests who wanted to see and explore Copenhagen in a different manner. We are exclusive, we are unique, and we customize each and all our tours. That is what our guests love, that is what we are good at hence we love guiding”, a founder and guide Kristian shares the concept of Tours in Copenhagen.

Since 2012 Kristian has conducted more than 1 000 tours. Tours in Copenhagen can offer various tours: “Kronborg & Frederiksborg Castle Tour”, “Copenhagen Walking tour”, “Copenhagen Driving tour”, “Copenhagen Bike Tour”, “Southern Sweden”, “Viking Tour” and “Food Tour”. The last two tours are the most popular.

The ultimate “Viking Tour” is offering a unique and immersive experience to learn about the rich history and culture of the Vikings, who were known for their seafaring, exploration, and conquests. To meet several descendants of Vikings, sail their Viking ships, taste their food, walk on their fortifications etc. “It is a full day driving tour with full focus on the Viking Era in Denmark, visiting an original Viking Fortification from 980, a rebuilt Viking Village and the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde and Roskilde Cathedral. There are many myths about Vikings, not least thanks to Hollywood, so there is a lot to correct. The Norse religion is super interesting to tell as well, all the legends of Odin, Thor, Freja, Tyr, Frigg, Heimdal, Ragnarock and the creation of the three worlds”, Kristian introduces one of the most popular tours.

If you love exploring new tastes, the “Food Tour” is a great choice. “The tour “Food Tour” was and is popular because of the name and concept of the New Nordic cuisine. This tour follows the meals of the day, starting with breakfast, moving to lunch and dinner to finish with sweets and desserts. On the tour we start with porridge, moving to Danish pastry, then sandwiches and hotdogs, you can get non-alcoholic drinks as well as local beer and several sweets and desserts, not to mention a different take on Danish culture and history”, according to Kristian this tour can be a great way to get a taste for local cuisine, as well as to learn the history and culture of Denmark.

“People love traveling and exploring new places – it is in our genes. Being a guide is the best part-time job in the world, but not a very good full-time job. The reason is, to make a living out of it, you have to guide so much. Another problem is scalability, or lack of, when it comes to guiding, which a concept like Legego might solve. But that is a problem for a guide, for people the main problem is that private guided tours are quite expensive, and open tours are not very adaptable. Legego might have a gain for this pain with virtual travel tours”, Kristian shares opinion about Legego and believes that Legego might solve some travel problems.
